Advice on a trip to USA?

Hi everyone

I’m planning on taking a trip to the USA at the end of 2009/early 2010

I need some advice on how much money I need to save for the trip

I’m planning on going to Seattle, New York, Hawaii, Grand Canyon, Central Park…

I need to account for airfares, accomodation, food, travel, etc.

I currently have $4000AU, how much would the total be?

Would I have to also hold a job to keep up with costs?

Also does anyone have any suggestions to any good cities to visit, and any advice for living in the USA?

Thankyou very much for your time.

You certainly want to compress a lot of sight seeing into a small package.

$4,000 UAD converted to US $ at todays rate is $3,842.80. It you are frugal and stay at the cheaper places or check on line for couch surfer places, it should get you by for a month or two.

I would cut out Hawaii and make it a separate trip. It is extremely expensive and you will spend a sizeable portion of your savings there. If you do go to Hawaii, buy your round trip ticket with a layover in Hawaii. Make it the first stop on your journey.

You will not be able to legally get a job in the US unless you can show proof of legal residency. Employers hiring tourist or illegal aliens are fined, and the alien is arrested and deported.

To work, you would need to obtain a Work Visa and a Temporary Resident card. These things need to be applied for prior to coming to the US.

Best Advice is to follow the common sense rules you use when in Sidney. Stay out of areas that look bad, because they are. Never carry large sums of money on you. Get a Visa Credit Card, and draw money out of the ATM’s as you need it.

You should consider how you plan on getting around the country. Air fare is extremely expensive and you don’t have enough money to buy airline tickets to all the places you have listed.
The US rail system is expesnive & dismal at best and doesn’t serve many of the places you want to go.

The US is an auto based society. We depend on personal owned vehicles to get around. Check on line to see how much car rental places will charge you to use a car. Then don’t forget the cost of insurance and gasoline. Currently averaging $4.00 per gallon. (128 liquid ounces or 3.8 litres)

To tell you of all the things you will need to know and cool things to see will take more space than YA will allow.

prague airfare

could you give me a good site, which has Cheap Airfare tickets prague?

from athens greece

Hello from Prague,

For cheap tickets, I would recommend Click4Sky, it belongs for Czech Airlines but sells only discount tickets, so you can find bargain prices: here is the concrete link to check your flight: http://www.click4sky.com/en/click4sky/c4s_homepage/c4s_homepage_cz.htm

Then try to book your accommodation in advance as Prague could be busy, mainly during the weekends. By the way the prices for accommodation are getting cheaper this year, because of the recession. If you prefer more space and flexibility go for a serviced apartments, one of the most reliable servers for finding good prices for apartments is ApartmentPlan.cz: http://www.apartmentplan.cz/
And if you prefer a hotel you can find good prices and services on: http://kingwenceslas.co.uk/accommodation/hotels.html

So good luck with your trip, and best wishes

Airfare Price Flucuation?

Going to Cabo for Honeymoon in August. Looked last week the prices were about 550 pp non stop. Looked today and they were 750+. I am 8 months out and I have been to mexico the past few summers and never paid this much. I just saw a special on tv on how two people sitting right next to each other paid different prices by about $600. The special also showed that 64 different rates were sold to people. when is the best time and place to buy tickets for my honeymoon.

I dont want to be the guy who paid 900 for a ticket sitting next to someone who paid 400.

It’s really the luck of the draw. You have to be checking fares just at the right moment in time to nail the cheapest. Airlines constantly monitor their own situation and what the competition is/are doing. They will generally release a small number of seats (could be 2, could be 4, could be ?) at a reduction, and when those are gone, the seat sale is over. This scenario could repeat itself a couple of weeks later if business is slow, or if one of the other airlines decides to reduce their fares. Or, it may not even happen again for that flight.

$341 roundtrip total on American fromto O’hare–nonstop flights. Best and cheapest to book direct from the airline: http://www.aa.com

I also expanded the search to include Bellingham, Milwaukee, Rockford, and South Bend, but the American flight O’hare-SeaTac is the best.

How to Get Great Deals on Published Airfares

Believe it or not, the price one passenger paid for an airline ticket could be cheaper or more expensive than the one bought by another. There are many reasons that could explain this so here are some tips on how to get great deals on vacations.

1. The first thing to do will be to call the airline company. Some promos are advertised in the newspaper or in the website while others are done without that much marketing effort.

2. If the passenger travels often on business, most carriers have mileage plus programs and instead of just collecting it, perhaps this is the best time to redeem it. If this is not enough for the trip, maybe this can be used to transfer to business class.

3. The next thing to do will be to check out low budget carriers that are also flying in the same destination. The price difference may not be that far apart but every cent saved can be used somewhere else.

4. Aside from the usual published airfares website, there are also others websites that offer budget trips. The person should look at this and compare before choosing to book the flight.

5. It is funny how a flight from California to New York only cost $199 in some months and $399 at certain times of the year. The sudden price hike is not because of the price of fuel went up. This is because the holidays are considered to be the peak months and this is the only time airline companies can make a ton of money.

Those who are planning on vacation can save money by traveling during the lean months instead of going what everyone else is doing. If this is not possible, the other way to save money is by flying during the middle of the week or during off hours because the price also goes down and the seats have to be filled.

6. The person may not know anyone in the next destination. One way to save money is by booking a flight that already includes car rental, travel insurance and hotel accommodation.

7. The other way to save a few dollars is by staying for a few days with friends and family members so that the money that is supposed to pay for the hotel can be used for shopping.

8. Another way to get great deals on vacation is by looking into courier flights. This is something that people often overlook but a few dollars can be saved in exchange for being a courier for a few hours.

9. Some airline companies give discounts for those who travel in groups of 4 or 6. The customer can ask about this or do some research on the web because every dollar counts when the family decides to go on a trip.

10. It is also possible to get last minute bargains but this means being a chance passenger to the desired destination. This happens when a passenger makes a last minute cancellation.

The tips mentioned are guaranteed to make the passenger save money and have the rest of the family enjoy the trip. After reading this information, those who have never done this before should start planning in advance the next vacation.

Question about IOM (International Organization for Migration?

Can someone tell me what the IOM does? I recently visited their website but WAY to much to read!!

Do they provide funding/travel expenses to immigrants leaving their home country to new countries as a loan and attempt to collect that money back??

I recently saw a letter from someone who received a letter from the IOM. Quote from letter : “costs of your travel were funded by the U.S. Government and must be repaid”

I mean..I know the Bush administration has done a terrible job handling economy and we’ re in a HUGE budget deficit…but for uncle Sam to demand refugees to pay back airfares from 20 years ago…is ridiculous!!! Comments??
ps— friend is a refugee from war torn Laos.

Well, IOM itself doesn’t fund anything. It’s paid by the US government to do everything it does, and since it’s a nongovermental organization, it doesn’t collect any money on the travel expenses or get any either, for that matter. The letter is a USG policy, not IOM. IOM helps process refugees for resettlement into the US, but it’s not the only NGO that does this. In many places, it does the immigration physicals, arranges for air transportation and works with the other NGOs. By the way, this is nothing new, this policy has been in effect for a very long time.

Oregon state government can reduce? Oregon legislature not been willing to staff the programs and stem growth, but painful decisions now seem inevitable

5 Ways to Find Dirt Cheap Airline Tickets

Due to the increasing price of airfare you may not be able to afford that dream vacation you were planning – or can you? Finding some dirt cheap airline tickets could be the difference between staying home or flying off to Europe for your next vacation. Granted it will still be somewhat expensive to fly, but what if you could knock a few hundred dollars off the cost of your airfare. By following these 5 tips you’ll be able to save money and take that vacation you’ve been dreaming of.

Buy your tickets in advance to keep them cheap:
By getting your airline tickets several months in advance you can save substantial moolah. This means at least 3 months in advance for traveling domestically and 6 months in advance for traveling internationally. Avoid peak seasons and holidays and keep in mind that the airlines regularly raise prices for tickets 3 weeks, 2 weeks, 1 week and several days before a planned flight. By getting your tickets early you can avoid these price hikes.

Wait until the last minute to buy your ticket:
You can get some great deals by waiting until the last minute, if you’re willing to be flexible. Not every flight will have vacancies, but when they do a last minute ticket can provide fantastic savings over a full price fare. Contact the airlines directly or check out sites like TravelZoo where they regularly post dirt cheap last minute deals.

Do your homework:
You shop for other major purchases like appliances and autos, you even shop for groceries sales so why not take some time to do some shopping for your airline tickets as well. Don’t take the first fare you find, switch days and times as well as airlines to find the best possible prices for a dirt cheap airline ticket. While you’re researching you can sometimes find the deal of a lifetime!

Know the best times to buy airline tickets:
By tracking the prices of airline tickets you’ll know exactly when they are the cheapest. You can even use sites like Farecast to get predictions of future airline ticket prices to over 75 U.S. cities. Pretty cool huh? This makes it easy to know if you should buy now or wait it out a bit.

Keep in mind too that early morning and late night flights are usually cheaper as are flights in the middle of the week.

Use ticket discounters:
You might have trouble finding tickets for major airlines through discounters, but they can save you a bundle of money at times. The smaller operations usually offer much cheaper flights because they aren’t as popular and don’t have advertising budgets that inflate their ticket prices. With the recent hikes in airline ticket prices these discounters are definitely increasing in popularity.

By following these 5 steps you’ll find it easy to score dirt cheap airline tickets. Everyone should be able to enjoy the feeling you get when you’re able to get a heavily discounted airfare, leaving you more money to enjoy your vacation.
