How to Get Great Deals on Published Airfares

Believe it or not, the price one passenger paid for an airline ticket could be cheaper or more expensive than the one bought by another. There are many reasons that could explain this so here are some tips on how to get great deals on vacations.

1. The first thing to do will be to call the airline company. Some promos are advertised in the newspaper or in the website while others are done without that much marketing effort.

2. If the passenger travels often on business, most carriers have mileage plus programs and instead of just collecting it, perhaps this is the best time to redeem it. If this is not enough for the trip, maybe this can be used to transfer to business class.

3. The next thing to do will be to check out low budget carriers that are also flying in the same destination. The price difference may not be that far apart but every cent saved can be used somewhere else.

4. Aside from the usual published airfares website, there are also others websites that offer budget trips. The person should look at this and compare before choosing to book the flight.

5. It is funny how a flight from California to New York only cost $199 in some months and $399 at certain times of the year. The sudden price hike is not because of the price of fuel went up. This is because the holidays are considered to be the peak months and this is the only time airline companies can make a ton of money.

Those who are planning on vacation can save money by traveling during the lean months instead of going what everyone else is doing. If this is not possible, the other way to save money is by flying during the middle of the week or during off hours because the price also goes down and the seats have to be filled.

6. The person may not know anyone in the next destination. One way to save money is by booking a flight that already includes car rental, travel insurance and hotel accommodation.

7. The other way to save a few dollars is by staying for a few days with friends and family members so that the money that is supposed to pay for the hotel can be used for shopping.

8. Another way to get great deals on vacation is by looking into courier flights. This is something that people often overlook but a few dollars can be saved in exchange for being a courier for a few hours.

9. Some airline companies give discounts for those who travel in groups of 4 or 6. The customer can ask about this or do some research on the web because every dollar counts when the family decides to go on a trip.

10. It is also possible to get last minute bargains but this means being a chance passenger to the desired destination. This happens when a passenger makes a last minute cancellation.

The tips mentioned are guaranteed to make the passenger save money and have the rest of the family enjoy the trip. After reading this information, those who have never done this before should start planning in advance the next vacation.

Question about IOM (International Organization for Migration?

Can someone tell me what the IOM does? I recently visited their website but WAY to much to read!!

Do they provide funding/travel expenses to immigrants leaving their home country to new countries as a loan and attempt to collect that money back??

I recently saw a letter from someone who received a letter from the IOM. Quote from letter : “costs of your travel were funded by the U.S. Government and must be repaid”

I mean..I know the Bush administration has done a terrible job handling economy and we’ re in a HUGE budget deficit…but for uncle Sam to demand refugees to pay back airfares from 20 years ago…is ridiculous!!! Comments??
ps— friend is a refugee from war torn Laos.

Well, IOM itself doesn’t fund anything. It’s paid by the US government to do everything it does, and since it’s a nongovermental organization, it doesn’t collect any money on the travel expenses or get any either, for that matter. The letter is a USG policy, not IOM. IOM helps process refugees for resettlement into the US, but it’s not the only NGO that does this. In many places, it does the immigration physicals, arranges for air transportation and works with the other NGOs. By the way, this is nothing new, this policy has been in effect for a very long time.

Oregon state government can reduce? Oregon legislature not been willing to staff the programs and stem growth, but painful decisions now seem inevitable

5 Ways to Find Dirt Cheap Airline Tickets

Due to the increasing price of airfare you may not be able to afford that dream vacation you were planning – or can you? Finding some dirt cheap airline tickets could be the difference between staying home or flying off to Europe for your next vacation. Granted it will still be somewhat expensive to fly, but what if you could knock a few hundred dollars off the cost of your airfare. By following these 5 tips you’ll be able to save money and take that vacation you’ve been dreaming of.

Buy your tickets in advance to keep them cheap:
By getting your airline tickets several months in advance you can save substantial moolah. This means at least 3 months in advance for traveling domestically and 6 months in advance for traveling internationally. Avoid peak seasons and holidays and keep in mind that the airlines regularly raise prices for tickets 3 weeks, 2 weeks, 1 week and several days before a planned flight. By getting your tickets early you can avoid these price hikes.

Wait until the last minute to buy your ticket:
You can get some great deals by waiting until the last minute, if you’re willing to be flexible. Not every flight will have vacancies, but when they do a last minute ticket can provide fantastic savings over a full price fare. Contact the airlines directly or check out sites like TravelZoo where they regularly post dirt cheap last minute deals.

Do your homework:
You shop for other major purchases like appliances and autos, you even shop for groceries sales so why not take some time to do some shopping for your airline tickets as well. Don’t take the first fare you find, switch days and times as well as airlines to find the best possible prices for a dirt cheap airline ticket. While you’re researching you can sometimes find the deal of a lifetime!

Know the best times to buy airline tickets:
By tracking the prices of airline tickets you’ll know exactly when they are the cheapest. You can even use sites like Farecast to get predictions of future airline ticket prices to over 75 U.S. cities. Pretty cool huh? This makes it easy to know if you should buy now or wait it out a bit.

Keep in mind too that early morning and late night flights are usually cheaper as are flights in the middle of the week.

Use ticket discounters:
You might have trouble finding tickets for major airlines through discounters, but they can save you a bundle of money at times. The smaller operations usually offer much cheaper flights because they aren’t as popular and don’t have advertising budgets that inflate their ticket prices. With the recent hikes in airline ticket prices these discounters are definitely increasing in popularity.

By following these 5 steps you’ll find it easy to score dirt cheap airline tickets. Everyone should be able to enjoy the feeling you get when you’re able to get a heavily discounted airfare, leaving you more money to enjoy your vacation.

Begin in Beijing – Beijing Travel Information

The best way to kick off your Asian travels is in China’s progressive and even tragically hip capital city of Beijing. Traditional relics like the Tiananmen gate stand juxtaposed against the imposing modernist architecture of recent history, most notable in the Dashanzi Art District. The People’s Republic of China has its financial industries mainly in Shanghai and Hong Kong, but Beijing remains the nation’s true cultural and political center.

Orange County Meets Ming Dynasty in Beijing

When many travelers think of Beijing, they imagine the dictatorial atmosphere of Mao Zedong or television images of protesting citizens; however, Beijing has a tremendous history beginning as early as the 1st century BCE and has persevered through Kublai Kahn’s Mongols, Japanese invasion, and the Communist Civil War victory in 1949.

The Forbidden City is a fascinating journey through 500 years of Imperial secrecy. The head of state no longer resides here and the beautiful buildings and breathtaking gardens are open to the public year-round. The entrance to the Forbidden City is the infamous Tiananmen Square and gate, protected by four formidable marble lions. Nearby, the Temple of Heaven is another sublime representation of an era of dynasties and royal architecture. With airfare to Beijing, you also have the extra opportunity to see the Great Wall of China, which is only one and a half hours away by bus.

Although there are hundreds of historical sites in Beijing, the rapidly sprawling metropolis is also overflowing with contemporary wonders and luxuries. The National Zoo houses the largest inland aquarium in the world as well as China’s famous pandas. Next to the Imperial Palace, the Wan Fung Art Gallery provides insight into the artistic transition from regal and traditional to cutting edge contemporary. Most interestingly, the suburban sprawl has witnessed the creation of a $60 million American-inspired community called Orange County, complete with town homes and tract housing.

Chinese Cultural Centrifuge in Beijing

Experience two cultural traditions in one at the Laoshe Tea House where you will be both charmed by Chinese opera and soothed by a variety of traditional teas. For world-class shopping in Beijing, visit Wangfujing, or you can find your way into the many enchanting smaller districts for traditional Chinese shops and boutiques. Beijing is also home to several notable temples like the Miaoying, and even a mosque that was built in 996.

With such dynamic experiences to offer and the immaculate preservation of its past, Beijing is truly an international city and there’s no wonder the cosmopolis has been chosen for the Olympics. Get your airfare to Beijing now or wait for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

Cruise Ships: What To Do Before You Board

There’s far more to preparing properly for a cruise ship vacation than simply checking with the cruise line for recommended apparel and going shopping for the right items of clothing. You’ll have plenty of other details to see to besides what you intend to pack in your luggage, not the least of which is ensuring that you have all your paperwork in order.

The first item of importance is your identification. You won’t be allowed on your cruise ship without a photo ID and proof of citizenship A passport will suffice for both, but if you don’t have one, then your driver’s license and official birth certificate (with a raised seal) will work. Even your kids will need the right identification. Make sure you don’t put your ID in your checked luggage if you are flying to your cruise departure point, because checked baggage can get lost!

The cruise lines don’t set the identification requirements; the US Department of Immigration does. So if you have any questions, call their toll-free number, which will almost certainly be included in the information packet which the cruise line sends with your tickets.

If you’re cruising to or in a foreign country, you will need a passport. You can apply in person for a US passport at a designated Post Office, at different probate, state, or Federal courts in your area, or at an official passport office, of which there are thirteen around the US. You’ll need an official birth certificate and a photo ID, and you’ll also need two identical 2? x 2? photos taken within the past six months. You should have them taken professionally, because they MUST be taken with a special camera if they’re to be identical.

Where, if you’re a US citizen, won’t you need a passport? Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and American Samoa. Cruises to Bermuda, the Bahamas, Mexico, and Central America require them. You should apply for your passport a minimum of eight weeks before your departure date, but the earlier you apply, the better, especially if you’ll be cruising at the height of tourist season. You can also speed up the processing of your passport by applying in person and paying an extra $35 for expedited delivery.

When you have your identification squared away, you can focus on your other paperwork: airline tickets; your boarding documents which will include your cabin assignment and possibly your dining table assignment (many cruises no let you eat whenever you like); you luggage tags; you transfers from the airport or hotel to your port of departure; and any papers for offshore excursions you’ve arranged. Make sure your flight leaves you time to get to your port of departure at least an hour in advance of the time you set sail.

Bring along your health insurance card in case you need medical treatment while on your cruise. Pack your medications, of course, and ask your doctor for a spare prescription in case your existing medication gets lost and you need a refill before returning home.

Get enough traveler’s checks to cover your estimated travel expenses. Carry only the minimum amount of cash, because all cruise lines will accept either credit cards or traveler’s checks. Before leaving home make sure to give your ship itinerary to whoever is looking after your home while you’re gone, so that you can be reached in an emergency. Most cruise ships now have Internet cafes, so you can be reached by E-mail if necessary. Also arrange to have someone be your contact person at home.

Once all your paperwork is in order, you can begin the fun by heading out to shop for your new cruise clothes!

Challenges Facing Start-Up & Low-Cost Airlines

While almost all travelers highly value cheap airplane tickets and cheap vacation packages, not everyone appreciates why it is so difficult for start-up airlines and low-cost airlines to thrive.  The problem is that the fittest do not always survive.

The challenges facing start-up airlines, as well as low cost airlines like JetBlue include:

  • Access to takeoff slots/gates at desirable airports
  • Restrictions on foreign investment in American airlines currently limits foreign ownership to 25 percent of voting rights
  • Rules preventing foreign airlines from flying within the U.S.

Industry experts question whether smaller airlines will be able to stay in business because the big legacy airlines benefit from global networks, government policies which favor them and marketing advantages that come with size, especially when negotiating contracts for profitable corporate travel.

Large legacy airlines are protected by a structure that limits the ability of new airlines to get into markets and expand.  The fact that miles earned for business travel are an untaxed employee benefit is a policy that favors large well established airlines.  It is not generally understood that the very popularity of existing frequent flier programs makes competition more difficult.

Some travel experts argue that letting some of the large legacy airlines go bust would be good for competition, opening up takeoff slots and airport access to more nimble, competitive airlines.

Currently the federal government is unwilling to let badly run inefficient large legacy airlines go away even though there are low cost well run efficient airlines ready to expand.

If you want to travel on the cheap but you’re concerned about financing a vacation, you can still make things happen with some careful planning. Once you’ve determined your travel preferences, you can start planning a great vacation on the cheap. Finding travel deals might even be easier than you think. In fact, many hotels are discounting rooms way lower than ever before in hopes of luring in some would-be travelers. You can also take advantage of a number of deals available through memberships like AAA and the Entertainment Book.

  1. Go on vacation during off-peak times. If you can still have decent weather, why pay top dollar for prime time?

  2. Use a credit card with air miles or hotel stay rewards. If you spend all year long earning air miles or hotel dollars, you can offset your vacation costs with the rewards you reap from your credit card.

  3. Get a copy of the money-saving Entertainment Book. In case you aren’t familiar, the Entertainment Book is a comprehensive volume of coupons, deals, and discounts at countless locations around the United States. You can buy a book for your local area or even get an Entertainment book for your destination, such as Buffalo, NY for a Niagara Falls vacation or Orlando, FL for a Disney vacation.

  4. Arrange your trip so you can make your own meals sometimes. If you stay in an efficiency or even a tent with a fire ring, you can cook some of your own meals to offset the cost of your vacation.

  5. Share expenses with a friend or group of friends. If you plan a road trip where you can carpool or all stay together in the same accommodations, you and your friends can split the costs as many ways.

  6. Take a more rugged trip, like camping, backpacking, or even a road trip. Save money by staying at hostels, cheap motels, or even under the stars in a tent. If you are set on a vacation with modern conveniences, look for a vacation house that you can rent from the owner.

  7. Become a member of AAA. Countless hotels and travel related companies offer discounts only to AAA members. The membership costs less than $50 a year and could save you lots more.

  8. If you’re seeking a tropical vacation, consider a cruise or an all-inclusive deal. A cruise offers the opportunity to see several wonderful destinations on the same vacation – totally more bang for your buck. Also, Mexico is known for having affordable prices and great vacation packages.

  9. Look for free and cheap things to do in addition to your planned itinerary. If you plan to do a more expensive activity, fill some of your other free time with lesser expensive or even free events. Also, seek out discount coupons and vouchers.

  10. Be willing to get bumped from a flight for Airfare Vouchers. Also, consider booking your flights in advance for better pricing if you notice costs beginning to climb.

While it won’t actually save you money, you can also begin saving for vacation before you even know you’re planning one. If you have a bit of a reserve of cash set aside for a trip, you won’t feel as guilty doing the things you really want to do on vacation!

Rome Voted Europe’s Most Attractive City, Has Best Cuisine
Rome continues to impress Australian holidaymakers according to the results of TripAdvisor’s third annual European Cities Survey.

Tips For Booking Travel To Italy

Rome is a popular destination and everyone who travels there finds something that makes his or her stay there worthwhile. This city is known for its architecture, art, historic monuments and many other tourist attraction sites. All sorts of people including businesspersons, religious leaders, historians, tourists, and even food lovers are drawn to this city throughout the year. With the amount of human traffic, getting cheap passage to the eternal city requires proper planning. It is advisable that booking is done early enough to avoid last minute flights, which are very expensive. The internet has enough information and access to a variety of cheap flights to Rome. Many airlines post their estimated airfare several months in advance to allow for payment. They give incentives to those who book early by charging less if the reservation is done early. Booking can therefore be done way in advance through the internet. The process of booking requires tourists to select the eternal city as their destination, identify the departure airports and specify the months of travel.

Comparing different airlines and their services is advisable to ensure a particular airline or vacation package, which may be less expensive, is not overlooked. Many people looking for inexpensive flights prefer economy cabin seats, since they are moderately priced. Weekend flight and emergency trips are expensive and it is therefore advisable that booking is done for midweek instead of weekends, Monday or Friday. Identifying a departure date at a time when few people are traveling helps those traveling to acquire bookings if they had traveled during a holiday national event or activity. Tourists who travel to central Italy from the month of July until August are fewer than other times of the year. These two months are more humid and hot than the other months and most tourists prefer a much cooler climate. It is, therefore, easier to obtain air travel to the eternal city during this time of year, since most airlines offer potential customers hefty discounts and other incentives to lure them to travel during these two months.

Inexpensive travel is made available to senior citizen and student tours as incentives to get more people traveling to Italy. Travelers that are funded through permits and grants to visit and study the culture of the country may be fortunate to receive discounted tickets. Companies are also known to auction through the internet, a scheme, which aims to benefit their regular clients. Bidding for tickets is an easier way of getting there than buying regular tickets. Visitors have several traveling options and they can select one that is most convenient for them. One of the options that may also offer cheap passage to Rome is connecting flights. Booking direct air is not necessary unless the traveler is in a rush since connecting flights are also available and are more affordable. When traveling to Italy, visitors can book European round-trip tickets. These tickets are available at reduced prices and allow tourists to visit several European cities using one ticket.
